The Eurovent Certified Performance (ECP) programme scope for Cooling Towers (CT), applies to factory packaged Cooling Tower product series (family) & subgroup ranges (or product lines) of Open & Closed-Circuit series Cooling Towers.
Eurovent Certita Certification (ECC) have a collaborative arrangement with USA based Cooling Technology Institute Est. 1950 (CTI) to use the CTI Thermal Performance Certification STD-201 (latest version) for certification compliance.
There are three key requirement steps to achieve and maintain ECC certification in compliance to the CTI STD-201. These being;

During 2020 the programme committee for cooling towers worked to develop a certify-more principle, with a stepped introduction plan. This principle covers products that are sold into Europe and European markets as specified in the certification manual.
a) Starting from January 1st 2022, all participants shall certify their main range with the scope of the certification programme, and main option. Any option representing more than 20% of unit quantity within a range shall be required to be part of the certified range. Also any new range released by the participant from January 1st, 2022 within the scope of certification shall declare it to Eurovent Certita Certification for inclusion of the certification process.
b) From January 1st, 2024 50% of all in scope certifiable units must be certified units.
c) From January 1st, 2026 80% of all in scope certifiable units must be certified units.
Cooling towers, also commonly known as evaporative heat rejection equipment, are a refrigeration system component designed to transfer heat from HVAC systems to the outdoor environment via water and air. Commonly used with chiller systems, cooling towers can be used in both buildings and processes, in a wide range of applications, from large residential to commercial and industrial.
Cooling towers are a specialised heat exchanger, in which air and water are brought into direct contact with each other, in order to reduce the water's temperature. Water heated by an industrial process or air-conditioning condenser, is pumped to the cooling tower through pipes. Once in the cooling tower, water sprays through nozzles onto banks of material called fill, which slows the flow of water through the cooling tower, and exposes as much water surface area as possible for maximum air-water contact. As the water flows through the cooling tower, it is exposed to air, which is pulled through the tower by a fan. When the water and air meet, a small amount of water is evaporated, creating a cooling action. The cooled water is then pumped back to the condenser or industrial process where the cycle starts again.

These cooling tower types have the same design system purpose. However, closed circuit cooling towers reject heat from the water pipes to the air via a heat exchange coil, isolating the process fluid from the outside air, keeping it clean and contaminate free in a closed loop.

The range of the certified thermal operating conditions shall not extend beyond the certified characteristics as per CTI STD-201, these being:
Certification tests on cooling towers shall be conducted with the measured flow rate of the process fluid at no less than 60% or more than 140% of the midpoint of the published flow rate limits for the cooling tower model.
During the certification tests, the product shall be operating within the manufacturers recommended limits of hot water head/nozzle spray pressure.
Certification tests shall be conducted with a specific product operating within 10% of its rated fan motor output power.
Prior to evaluating the unit performance, the capacity at the test barometric pressure shall be adjusted to the standard barometric pressure using the equation below:
CSBP = CTBP/(1+K1)(BPStd-BPT))

CSBP= Capacity adjusted to Standard Barometric Pressure
CTBP = Capacity at Test Barometric Pressure
K1 = Constant equal to .0023 for SI and 0.0078 for IP
BPStd = Standard Barometric pressure equal to 101.325 kPa for SI and 29.92 in Hg for IP
