Eurovent Certification and the UK’s Energy Technology List (ETL) have aligned testing standards to streamline the listing process for manufacturers and simplify product selection for specifiers.
Heat pump selection can be a minefield, but things just got easier due to a collaboration between Eurovent Certification and the Energy Technology List (ETL). The ETL and Eurovent Certification have worked together since early 2024 to align testing standards so that Eurovent Certification test reports can be used to apply for the ETL, provided the products meet its strict energy performance criteria. With alignment already confirmed for Evaporative Air Coolers, Professional Refrigerated Storage Cabinets and Refrigerated Display Cabinets, five Heat Pump sub-technologies can now use their Eurovent certified data to apply for the ETL.
The Energy Technology List is a scheme for the UK market featuring around 8,000 independently verified and accredited energy efficient products across 65 sub-technology groups, backed by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). Products featured on the ETL must be in the top 25% for energy efficiency on the market, in their class. The scheme is free for both manufacturers and specifiers. It helps UK businesses, and the public sector make greener energy choices by selecting the most energy efficient products.
Eurovent Certification is a third-party certification body that assesses the performance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) products. Trusted worldwide, Eurovent Certification programmes independently verify product performance data, via a stringent and impartial certification process, which includes laboratory testing, factory audits, software audits, and data consistency checks.
Manufacturers will often already possess Eurovent Certification, and this can now be used directly for ETL applications, reducing the need for re-testing between the programmes, saving on both time and costs for manufacturers. This means it is quicker and easier to get ETL certification, with the ETL scheme a prominent marker of energy efficiency and a way to make products more visible for energy-conscious purchasers.
The five Heat Pump sub-technologies include:
Purchasers will also benefit as it means they can make assured decisions when buying energy-efficient Heat Pumps, that are both ETL and Eurovent Certification approved.
The collaboration is a smart move as Heat Pumps are in the top 10 products searched for on the ETL. Likewise, Heat Pump certification is proving ever popular, with Eurovent Certification offering a portfolio of ETL aligned heat pump programmes including Eurovent Certified Performance, MCS (MCS007) and the NF414 mark.
Eurovent Certification’s Partnership Manager, Ian Butler, said:
“Another milestone has been hit with the alignment of Eurovent Certified Heat Pump programmes with the ETL’s strict entry criteria. Creating synergy between ETL and third-party certifications such as Eurovent Certified Performance is vital, as it streamlines the ETL entry process while ensuring testing standards remain trusted, comprehensive and robust.
As a Government backed initiative, the ETL is a vital tool for manufacturers wishing to reach UK businesses and public sector decision makers. Likewise, the ETL removes risk for product decision makers, helping them identify the most energy efficient products to meet both decarbonisation goals and project requirements. By choosing products on the ETL that are also Eurovent Certified, specifiers and end users have double the guarantee of product performance and sustainability.”
Tom Lock, Consulting Director at ICF and Programme Director for the ETL Scheme, said:
“We are delighted to expand our alignment with Eurovent Certification as this reflects the ETL’s commitment to remove barriers and make it easier for manufacturers to have their energy efficient products listed, thereby offering greater choice for purchasers and specifiers.”
The ongoing collaboration between the ETL and Eurovent Certification signifies a commitment to identifying where criteria for certification lines up on both schemes, and the communication of this to manufacturers. The partnership boosts visibility and adoption of energy-efficient products, an important step in the UK’s moves towards Net Zero.
